1. Russians like to show off

When Russian people dress up, they try to impress. Sky-high heels, glittery miniskirts and fur coats on impeccably made-up girls as though they’ve stepped out of a fashion magazine. Russian women like to show off their clothes in public but they are not accustomed to doing so at home. Colours: although being often accused by their western neighbours of wearing “kitch” Russians do!!! love colourful clothes and fabrics.

3. Russians love vodka

It`s sad but partially it is true. If you are ever at an event of any sort organized by Russian people, there will be vodka there, and it will be offered to you! It’s not true, however, that Russians get extremely offended when you refuse a shot – it’s more that they’re surprised, because to them it’s not at all a big deal. And of course, remember that just because Russians like vodka, it does not mean that they are alcoholics – they can just drink more than the rest of the world!

Although the Russian government is slowly starting to impose harsh anti-smoking regulations, Russia still has one of the highest smoking rates in the world. Expect second-hand smoke to be practically inevitable on Russian streets.

7. Russian women are beauties

Walk down any street in any Russian city but especially it is common in Volgograd and you will see that this is absolutely true. Young Russian women are gorgeous, and they are very particular about their appearance – most Russian women will not go outside without their hair and make-up perfectly done and their outfit, shoes and accessories perfectly matching. Even in the winter, you will see many Russian women on the streets in the following outfit: short skirts, tights, heels, and a fur coat.

9. There is corruption in Russia
9. There is corruption in Russia

Sad, but true... if you get stopped by police for a random check in the Metro and don’t have your passport with you, or even if you’re stopped for a traffic violation, police will often offer you a choice between an official ticket (and jail time in some cases!) or paying them off, quite a large amount. Any Russian bureaucrat – actually, almost any employee – can be bribed and often that’s the only way to get things done.

2. Russian clubs

It’s true mainly for Moscow, most Russian clubs are designed for the very rich there, with strict face-control and HORRENDOUS fees. While it is possible to find some affordable clubs in Russia, be prepared to face high cover charges and even be turned away if you are not dressed up to the nines. If you're not up for that, try going to a bar instead, which can often be just as lively but a lot less expensive!

4. Russian babushkas

Good news – They exist! The word babushka denotes any elderly woman, taking no notice of family connections. Babushkas in Russia seem to represent a totally independent part of society - they know everything, are good at giving a piece of advice whether you’ve asked for it or not. They often tell people off in the metro, fight their way to get a seat in a crowded bus, pass in front of the others in the lines at the bank. Sometimes they are honest nice grannies, sometimes nasty ones.

 6. Russians are superstitious
6. Russians are superstitious

Russian people do have a lot of “superstitions” . Many Russians will sit down inside their house before leaving for a trip to ensure a good journey. After someone has left the house on a long journey, their room and/or their things should not be cleaned up; we will consider it good luck to break a glass accidentally. Most people don’t actually believe these things “work”, but they always – always – do them anyway:)

8. Russians are serious
8. Russians are serious

In Russia, it is not common to smile at strangers. When you smile at a stranger in Russia, you may get the question “Have we met?” in return, because Russians normally smile only to people they know. Also, this is not common to smile when dealing with more serious issues. You wouldn't see many smiling faces in business meetings, because business is serious, and by smiling, you show that you either don't take it seriously or you distrust your partners' words.

10. Chivalrous men and...

Men are expected to be very traditionally chivalrous, opening doors, pulling out chairs, and paying for the ladies. “A real Russian woman only pays for chocolate and stockings.”:) But nowadays chivalry of Prince Charming feels lovely, sweet but a bit old-fashioned.
